Now is the month of Maying, when merry lads are playing! Fa la la la la!
Each with his bonny lass, a-dancing on the grass, fa la la la la!

The Spring, clad all in gladness, doth laugh at Winter's sadness! Fa la la la la!
And to the bagpipes’ sound, the nymphs tread out the ground! Fa la la la la!

Fie! Then why sit we musing, youth’s sweet delight refusing? Fa la la la la!
Say, dainty nymphs and speak! Shall we play barley break? Fa la la la la!

[identity profile] randomchris.livejournal.com 2004-03-01 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, have done that with the Renaissance Singers, possibly the most dodgy-minded and apt-to-pounce-on-double-entendres choir in Edinburgh (despite containing at least three ordained clergy), and we decided "barley break" was a euphemism for something very dodgy indeed. Theories abounded at the post-concert party...

Arrrggghhhh!

There is never a need for this much fa la la ing. Even in the month of maying which i might point out it isn't at the moment.

Fair Phyllis I saw sitting all alone,
Feeding her flocks near to the mountainside.
The shepherds knew not whither she was gone,
But after her lover Amyntas hied:
Up and down he wander’d
While she was missing;
When he found her,
O, then they fell a kissing.

(You really have to hear this one to get the benefit - the music tends to make it sound more naughty as the parts overlap one another and stuff.)

(puts head in hands)

And my personal favourite...

April is in my mistress' face.
And July in her eyes hath place.
Within her bosom is September,
But in her heart a cold December.

Which doesn't sound remotely rude until you hear it, and realise how much the alto part especially lingers (repeatedly) over the "bo" in "bosom". Hehehe!

*snuggles*

Bad day over here, too.
